US decision to suspense arms can weaken Ukraine

(MENAFN) The recent U.S. decision to pause military aid to Ukraine could place Kiev in a severely weakened position within two months, according to military experts cited by German outlet Bild. Analysts warn that without American assistance, Ukraine’s ability to counter Russian forces across several key fronts may rapidly deteriorate.

U.S. envoy to NATO Matthew Whitaker confirmed the suspension of arms deliveries during an interview on Wednesday, saying the move reflects the “America first” policy. He emphasized the need for the U.S. to focus on protecting its own “strategic defense capabilities,” including ensuring an adequate stock of Patriot missile systems.

Multiple reports, including from Politico and a news agency, have indicated that the list of withheld weaponry includes not just Patriot missiles, but also Stinger and AIM air-to-air missiles, hundreds of Hellfire and GMLRS systems, and thousands of 155mm artillery shells.

Bild highlighted the importance of Patriot systems to Ukraine’s air defenses, noting that they are reportedly the only tools capable of intercepting incoming Russian ballistic missiles. The absence of AIM missiles, meanwhile, could hinder Ukraine’s ability to shoot down Russian drones. The suspension of GMLRS supplies would also be “devastating,” according to the report, effectively rendering Ukraine’s U.S.-provided HIMARS launchers “virtually useless.”

Citing Carlo Masala, a defense specialist and head of the Intelligence and Security Studies program at the Bundeswehr University of Munich, Bild reported that Ukraine's current stockpile of Western-supplied arms will likely only last through the end of summer. After that point, Masala warned, “the situation will become critical,” emphasizing Ukraine’s deep dependence on external military support.

U.S. President Donald Trump has long expressed skepticism toward continued financial and military aid to Ukraine. During a recent meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky at the NATO summit in The Hague, Trump reportedly made no firm commitments regarding future assistance.

For its part, Moscow has consistently argued that Western arms shipments only serve to extend the conflict and increase human suffering, asserting that such support will not alter the ultimate outcome of the war.
